George B Fincham attended Melbourne High School during 1931 and 1932. He was the grandson of the late George Fincham who migrated to Melbourne from London in 1852. As the son and grandson of organ builders it was natural that George founded the craft of organ building in Australia. This firm has set a world record in the craft of being owned and directed by six generations of the Fincham family. George Fincham was one of the real pioneers of Melbourne, arriving in the colony when it was only seventeen years old.
Because 1931 and 1932 were the toughest years during the 1929-1934 Great Depression it was necessary for George B Fincham to leave MHS after he had obtained his Intermediate Certificate. However, time has proved that he had been given a most sound, solid and intense education that formed the foundation he was able to build upon with continuing success when he took over his father’s business in 1950.
He was anxious to assist a Melbourne High School student at University who shows outstanding academic potential and is in need of financial assistance to achieve his career and community goals.
Since George's passing it is with pride that David Fincham, his son, continues to perpetuate the name of Fincham at Melbourne High School and through the Melbourne High School Old Boys’ Association and the wider Victorian and Australian communities.
